Bring the water cycle to life and uncover local history, follow chronological events that link to the history of London and learn about the effect of dirty water on the population before heading to one of the largest bird hides in London to observe waterbird behaviour in this important refuge for wildlife. Session covers: Local history study; chronology; historical interpretation and enquiry; locational knowledge in East London over time; stages of the water cycle. In this unique session compare and contrast natural and manmade features of the meandering River Lea, the straight River Lee Navigation and lakes created from gravel extraction. Students discuss and record geographical features, waterbirds species present, complete field sketches and discuss flow rates of the three waterways. How did early hunter-gatherers survive? Discover the animals with whom they shared their world and the plants they would have used for food and medicine. Gather materials and explore ancient and modern fire lighting techniques and try your hand at prehistoric art. Investigate how modern humans have built up a picture of these incredible times using archaeology and the evidence unearthed.

Measure yourself against an Olympian and see how fast you can run the 5,000m! Looking back at London 2012... Mo Farah won gold during the London 2012 Olympics in the Mens 5000m 🥇 His winning time was 13 minutes, 41 seconds! How fast can you run 5km? Time yourself on your phone or watch and let us know! There's a 5km route at Gunpowder Park that you can follow. Download the map here . Why not join in on a parkrun - our route follows the same as parkrun which happens every Saturday. It starts at 09:00 and it is 2 laps of the park (our mapped route follows the same as parkrun). What is parkrun? A free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event. Walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate – it's up to you! You can sign up on the website to receive a barcode and each time you take part, you'll get an official time when you scan your barcode. These sessions are a great opportunities to take that first step in leading a more active lifestyle and find out more information in a friendly and welcoming environment. Lead by our Head Gardener You will be welcome into the stable block with a hot drink and Christmas treat, to learn all the skills of wreath making from the expert. Each wreath will be unique and completely sustainable using natural decorations and foliage from the garden. All foliage and equipment will be provided and you can enjoy the session chatting with friends while admiring your creations. The session will be in the historic Stable Block in the courtyard on the Bowles Tea Room, so make sure you wrap up warm for the festivities.
