Rockets to Woodland Distance: 3 miles Terrain: surfaced pathways including a small section of grass path and walk-around gate Starting point: Gunpowder Park car park, Sewardstone Road, Waltham Abbey, Essex EN9 3GP Download route narrative > At at glance information for this route Accessible Dog friendly Great for picnics Parking available Route - cycling Route - running Route - walking Toilets available A circular valley route discovering the explosive history of Sewardstone Marsh’s wet woodland. The route travels west, following the perimeter of Gunpowder Park down to Sewardstone Marsh, looping around the woodland area before heading north back through the centre of Gunpowder Park. Directions Enter Gunpowder Park via the entrance to the right of the Field Station and proceed along the surfaced path, passing the fuse mounds on the left Continue along the path, passing the entrance way on your right and continue towards the Flood Relief Channel Follow the path to the left, passing an entrance and Black Ditch West Bridge on your right, and continue At the triangular section of grass, bear to the right and continue over a wooden fenced bridge Bear left at the next junction, passing the entrance leading to Westway Bridge on your right, and continue south past a bat hibernacula on your left alongside the Flood Relief Channel Continue along the path, past the West Pool and past the entrance leading to Cattlegate Bridge on the right and through the walk-around gate onto Sewardstone Marsh Continue along the path to the south end of the Park at the signpost turn left, towards Epping Forest At the second junction, turn left onto the grass path heading north Bear to the left at the picnic area, returning towards the Cattlegate Bridge entrance, through the wooded area Turn right, onto the surfaced pathway, returning into Gunpowder Park At the information board, bear to the right and continue along the pathway, passing two junctions At the third junction, turn right and follow the path up and over the hill back towards the Field Station. (The Meridian viewpoint is a short detour from the route. < Back Nordic Walking Nordic Walking is an enhanced walking technique that uses poles to work your upper body as well as your legs. It gives you a highly effective all over workout that doesn’t feel like one. How will Nordic Walking benefit your body? Nordic Walking combines the simplicity of walking with core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. This gives you a full body workout, which means that you can: Burn around 20% more calories compared to walking without poles Release tension in your neck and shoulders Improve your posture and gait Strengthen your back and abdominal muscles Reduce the impact on your joints And because Nordic Walking doesn’t feel like hard work you’ll be happy to walk further and for longer. Is Nordic Walking for you? It’s an ideal activity if you haven’t exercised for a while or dislike traditional sports or gym activities It's helpful if you have had an injury as the poles can support and guide you while you work to improve fitness as part of your rehabilitation It's great for athletes for cross training It provides community groups with a sociable way to keep fit And it’s fantastic if you’d like to shed a few pounds. Whatever your age, from eight to 80, you’ll enjoy discovering the benefits of Nordic Walking helping to improve your quality of life. Lee Valley run a weekly instructor led Nordic walking session from River Lee Country Park starting at Fishers Green car park on Mondays at 10:00. Honorary Warden for Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary Department: Location: Working with: Time: Rangers service Waltham Abbey Gardens, Abbey View, Waltham Abbey, Essex EN9 1XD Ranger Team North Flexible, no minimum time commitment Purpose Help promote the park and provide information to the public, ensuring visitors safe use and enjoyment of the park. As part of a team of volunteers, you will be the Regional Park's eyes and ears. Details of role To assist with patrol, monitoring and management of wildlife habitats and species consistent with the park’s Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). To assist the ranger serivce with monitoring and managing the safety and integrity of the Park’s natural and built areas. To report to rangers any issues, defects or problems, issues with locking/unlocking of park facilities and issues associated with infrastructure maintenance, security and safety. To inform the ranger service or Senior Responsible Officer of any on-site emergencies, including breaking of Park Byelaws. To act as on-site wardens and ambassadors providing general on-site assistance to park users. To assist with liaison with local community user groups and consultation initiatives. Personal attributes Should be of an active nature. Should have a friendly and approachable manner. Should have a good knowledge of the park. Have a basic knowledge of flora and fauna. Knowledge and experience of conservation management is helpful, but not necessary. What's in it for you An opportunity to gain experience of ranger work. The walk terrain is flat and paved so it's ideal for all ages and slower walkers. Please wear suitable footwear, comfortable trainers or walking boots would be ideal.
