Discovery and connection

Join us for a varied walk through the Lee Valley Country Park, Waltham Abbey and the countryside beyond. The route takes in woodland, waterside, farmland and some urban walking, on a mix of surfaced and unsurfaced paths. Walking boots are recommended in times of wet weather as some paths may be muddy. The terrain is mostly flat but has one steep incline halfway through, followed by a gentle descent.

The walk begins with a loop around some of the lakes and waterways in the country park, then leaves at Fishers Green for a climb up Monkhams Hill and a trig point marking 83m above sea level and excellent views over London. We then walk downhill through farmland to Waltham Abbey and the reputed tomb of King Harold, said to be buried here after the Battle of Hastings. After this we return to the country park and finish with refreshments at YHA Lee Valley.

This walk is led by Stag Walkers, a Ramblers group based in Hertfordshire and aimed mainly at people in their 20s, 30s and a bit beyond. This walk is not suitable for dogs. Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.

Walk includes:

  • A chance to see wildlife, art, historic sites and wide-ranging views

  • Meet other friendly walkers

  • Free cuppa and cake at the finish
