This is a fantastic opportunity for students to visit Lee Valley Ice Centre following its major regeneration and opening of a new facility in June 2023.
Explore the urban regeneration of the new Lee Valley Ice Centre and its surroundings. Discover how sustainability links the buildings, visitors and biodiversity of the Centre before or after your session on the ice.
Due to investment made by Waltham Forest Local Authority, schools based in the borough of Waltham Forest can enjoy this programme free of charge, with bookings available on a first come first served basis. This includes the option to enjoy a free ice skating session whilst on site. For schools outside of Waltham Forest, please refer to the prices tab for all session costs.
Session covers: observing local wildlife and their habitats, studying the key concepts of urban regeneration and looking at sustainability in action.
Activities include:
Introduction to the new ice centre and its surroundings and how it caters for both humans and wildlife
Researching the biodiversity and sustainability of the built and natural environments
Field sketching and identification
Using geography tools for assessing sustainability
Design project
Here's an example of how your day at Lee Valley Ice Centre could look:
10:30: arrive and register
11:00 - 12:00: enjoy an ice skating session at this state of the art venue
12:00 - 12:30: utilise the café or enjoy your lunch in the green spaces of Leyton and Walthamstow Marshes
12:30 - 14:00: take part in our ‘Sustainability in Action’ educational session (option to extend to 14:30, if requested)
14:00: finish and return to school
