With an indoor arena and two floodlit outdoor riding arenas, the 25 acre Lee Valley Riding Centre is the ideal place for horse riding lessons in London.

These courses for complete beginners are offered at a discount rate and allow you to learn the skills of riding in a fun, group environment. There are separate courses for adults and children, so everyone progresses together, and you’ll be amazed at how confident you’ll feel as a rider by the time you receive your certificate of achievement at the end of the course!

No special kit is required, as hats and boots are available to borrow for free. Each session lasts for an hour and there are evening courses running throughout the year.

Have a Go lessons

Have a Go lessons are group sessions for complete beginners, where riders can experience being on horseback in a relaxed, safe environment on well trained horses and ponies.

You’ll learn the basics from mounting to mastering trot. Riding hats and boots are free to borrow with this lesson, so why not...have a go!

  • Before you start your lessons make sure you fill in the Riders Registration form here.
  • Have a Go lessons are not bookable for more than three children per session. Games and picnics are prohibited at our venue for safety reasons.

Rusty Riders

Thinking about getting back in the saddle? These daytime session are perfect if you have previous riding experince and are ready to give riding another go. Fine tune previously learned skills and rebuild confidence.

  • Suitable for riders at walk, trot and learning to canter plus
  • Mondays, 11:00 - 12:00 
  • £33 per session (includes hat and boot hire)
  • Riders must be 18 or over.

Group lessons

Group lessons are available for beginners up to advanced riders and run all year round on weekends and weekday evenings. There are also group jumping lessons for all abilities.

Book online

Before you can book a group lesson online, one of our British Horse Society qualified instructors will need to assess your riding and suggest the best group for you – you can be assessed on a Have a Go lesson or a private lesson.

Once you have been assessed you  can obtain your membership number from the centre and use it to log in and book group lessons online.

Private lessons

Private lessons

To fit in with busy lives, private lessons can be arranged any time between 07:15 and 21:00 Monday to Thursday, and between 08:00 and 18:00 on Friday to Sunday.


The centre provides dressage and show jumping tuition. There's also a cross-country jumping course available for lessons for experienced riders when ground conditions permit.

Riding for the disabled sessions

Run in partnership with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), sessions last for half an hour and are for groups of up to five riders. Sessions are taught by specially trained instructors and volunteers who assist riders and lead the horses and ponies.

If you think the RDA sessions would be right for you or a person in your care, you're welcome to come and watch a session in progress and have a chat about suitability and availability – contact the centre for more information.

Essential information

  • You must agree to our Terms and Conditions
  • For all sessions you must arrive at least 15 minutes before your session is due to start and be present by the arena ready to start before the session begins
  • Late arrivals will not be admitted to Have a Go lessons, and lessons cannot be rescheduled or refunded if you are late
  • Riding and other activities at Lee Valley Riding Centre carry inherent risks. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement. All riders must complete a Rider Registration Form before their activity starts, which must be signed by a Parent/Guardian for children under 18.
  • If you or the person you are booking for has a disability, learning disability, an injury or physical or other medical condition, you must contact us before booking on 020 8556 2629 or riding@vibrantpartnerships.co.uk as the desired session may not be suitable. We will need some detailed information and may need to carry out a risk assessment lesson so we can recommend the best activity for you.
  • All lessons must be booked and paid for in advance, either online, by visiting the centre or by phone. Have a Go lessons are only bookable online
  • Bookings can be amended so long as you give at least 48 hours’ notice
  • Riders must wear jodhpurs, or loose-fitting or stretchy trousers, a sleeved top and strong shoes or boots with a small block heel
  • Riding hats are available to hire - free to ‘Have a Go’ riders. If you'd like to bring your own, please refer to our Terms and Conditions to see if it's suitable for use at Lee Valley Riding Centre.
  • Riding boots are available to borrow free of charge
  • A body protector must be worn for all jumping lessons – customers must provide their own body protector
  • Maximum rider weight is 13 stone/83kg
  • Children must be five years old or over to join all group activities
  • By booking, you agree to our Terms and Conditions
  • Games and picnics are prohibited at our venue for safety reasons.
