A Walk in the Park - Gunpowder Park and Enfield Island Village Heritage Trail

This week's walk explores the transformed, exciting country park where people, wildlife and the arts coexist in a rather more peaceful environment. This walk will aslo take the heritage trail around Enfield Island Village and see how the history of the site links with the Park.

An ex MOD site Gunpowder Park was closed to the public for over 100 years and was shrouded in mystery for many years. Secret testing went on behind security fences until the Lee Valley Park converted the site into a public space.

Walkers love this area due to the network of all-weather paths, and a permissive bridle way which welcomes horse riders through the summer months. The Park is also home to a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly field station. This amazing building with its grass roof reflects the Park’s industrial heritage. Land forms demonstrate the history of the site and merge with art in the Park.

The site is also excellent for Wildlife. You might hear the song of the Skylark or see Yellowhammers in the hedgerows. Look out for Owl boxes as you go round and information on the night time creatures - this is a good site for bats.
