A Walk in the Park - Gunpowder Park, Swan and Pike, and Enfield Island

During this weeks walk, you will discover Gunpowder Park, Swan and Pike Pool and Enfield Island.

Starting at the Gunpowder Park Filed Station with its unique Gabion walls you will learn about how the park used to be home of munitions testing and visiting was not recommended. Now Gunpowder Park in a vast space of exciting country park where people, wildlife and the arts coexist in a rather more peaceful environment. It took ten years to complete the redevelopment of the ex MOD site and you will learn about the how the site was decontaminated and remained part of the Green Belt.

Leading from Gunpowder Park you will pass the Thames Water Resovoirs and we will visit Swan and Pike Pool, a very well known location for rivers and angling, walking and a great spot for picnics! Swan & Pike Pool was reputedly a Victorian bathing pool, and also a turning around point for the powder mill canal barges.

Moving onto Enfield Island, a formal royal small arms factory which is now home to housing estate and backs onto the beautiful Gunpowder Park. The main factory was at Enfield Lock on a marshy island between the River and the Navigation – the factory was built the instruction of the Board of Ordnance near the end of the Napoleonic War.

So come and join us for a history soaked walk around this once secret site which was closed to the public for over 100 years.
