Beginners and club riders can both enjoy the thrill of the BMX track at Lee Valley VeloPark. Sessions range from riding the berms, learning the basics in our experience sessions, to getting race ready.

BMX Taster sessions

Hit the berms in this experience session on the BMX track. Put your skills to the test as you get to grips with this fun sport.

If you're a competent rider who's comfortable on a BMX bike, this session is for you.

  • To get the most out of your BMX Taster session we recommend attending a  CoreStart - Learn to Ride BMX session first to help develop your skills.

Experience the thrill of both Track cycling and BMXing in this ultimate session. Learn the key techniques to riding our 250 metre velodrome track before taking on BMX and putting your skills to the test.

BMX CoreStart - Learn to Ride BMX

If you've never experienced BMX then this session is for you. Learn basic skills including the ready position and bike handling techniques to help you gain confidence and prepare you for our other BMX sessions. 

Starting in our skills section, riders will get the chance to progress on to the BMX track as skills develop.

SkillSeries sessions

BMX Skills

90 minutes
Standard £10
Minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2in
Minimum age 7

In this session riders will develop skills in the following areas:

  • Cornering and different race lines in the berms
  • Pumping to build speed over rollers and jumps
  • Manualing and front wheel lift
  • Basic jumping
  • Gate starts
  • Racing and riding close to other riders

Learn to Cycle

 

We offer bespoke 1:1 lessons for adults and children which are tailored to individual needs from the basics of learning to ride a bike all the way through to discipline specific skills sessions on our Road Circuit or Mountain bike trails. 

 

BMX riders
  • You must be a British Cycling BMX club member or have passed a BMX Taster session before attending this session
  • Arms and legs must be fully covered

Pay and Ride

Standard £5

These open sessions are ideal for BMX riders who want to use the track and its features for fun or to practise your skills.

Please note, you must have passed a BMX Taster before you can attend a Pay and Ride session. If you are a member of a British Cycling BMX club you do not need to attend a Taster, however you will need to bring your race license or BC membership as proof of competency.

Family Pay and Ride

Family session with bike hire £45 (4 people - maximum 2 adults)

School groups

Sessions are one hour
£105 per hour (up to 15 students)

We run specially priced one hour sessions for schools to give young people their first taste of BMX.

Schools can book on to a series of one hour, fully coached sessions to progress their skills, ending with structured races.

  • We strongly recommend schools book a Pedal Up session before a discipline specific session for KS1 - KS2 pupils
  • These sessions are suitable for ages 5 - 11
  • All equipment is included
  • Maximum of 15 children per session
  • You must arrive 30 minutes prior to the session time
  • Teachers are not permitted to ride in the session and must act as supervision
  • For the whole group to progress within the session the coach will ensure all children are at a similar basic level. Those who are not may be asked to sit out some sections of the session (and will need to be supervised by a teacher)

Pedal Up school sessions

Sessions are one hour
£100 per hour

Minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2 ins

Pedal Up sessions are the ideal first pedal towards young people riding a bike. Whether they've only recently learnt to ride a bike or want to build confidence - these sessions are a great introduction before going on to develop specific skills for each discipline.

These sessions run by our fully qualified coaches will help children master the FUNdamentals of cycling including basic skills such as cornering, braking and bike handling.

FAQs

How do I get to ride the BMX track?

BMX is a fun and exhilarating sport enjoyed by millions across the globe and if you've not tried it before, now's your chance! You don't need to have ridden a BMX before but as long as you can ride a bike without stabilisers, are aged 7 or over and a minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2in you can join one of our taster sessions.

Skills sessions are also available to help you develop your skills in various areas.

What should I wear?

For BMX you must wear a full face cycling helmet and full finger gloves. Legs, upper body and arms must be covered at all times. Flat soled trainers must be worn.

Bike and helmet hire is included in the session but you must provide your own fulll finger BMX gloves. Helmets are available to hire for other sessions or you may bring your own but they must meet the safety regulations stated in our essential information.

We recommend the following:

  • Body armour, knee and elbow pads, cycling glasses.
  • Two layers of clothing on your upper body (preferably fairly close fitting)

Can I cycle when pregnant?

Unfortunately we do not allow women who are pregnant to cycle any of our tracks or circuits whilst pregnant.

Essential information

  • For coached sessions you must arrive at least 45 minutes before your session is due to start.
  • Riders must be capable of riding without stabilisers to use the BMX track.
  • Minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2in.
  • Children aged 11 and under must be accompanied and supervised at all times by a parent / guardian.
  • Children aged 12 and over do not require parent / guardian supervision however it is strongly recommended.
  • Children under 18 participating in any sessions e.g. General Taster Sessions, Youth Taster Sessions, skills sessions, pay and ride must bring a signed Parental/Guardian Consent Form with them to be able to participate in their session.
  • Should the child be participating in a ‘coached’ session the parent/guardian should remain in the area indicated by the coach during the safety briefing and/or follow meeting instructions given.
  • Junior prices apply to riders under 18.
  • Riders participating in a BMX taster session are required to provide full finger BMX gloves. Bike and helmet hire is included in taster sessions.
  • Equipment hire: Taster sessions include bike and helmet hire, all other sessions do not include any equipment (unless otherwise specified) - you can hire equipment (bike/helmet) from the venue but you will require personal identification and proof of address (utility, bank or other statements must be less than three months old).
  • Riders are required to wear helmets and safety equipment while cycling on any of the four circuits at Lee Valley VeloPark. Where this is not included in the session cost you may hire a helmet from the venue. The helmet must be worn correctly at all times when with a bike. If you wish to bring your own it must meet the current UK safety standard - BS EN 1078:1997.
  • Cycling and other activities available at Lee Valley VeloPark carry inherent risks. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement. If you're unsure whether you are able to participate in any activity, or if you have any questions concerning our terms and conditions, your booking form or the safety and risk declaration, please ask a member of staff before you enter into a contract or agree to partake in  cycling at Lee Valley VeloPark.
