Private tuition

Private ice skating tuition and training

Whether you're a beginner or advanced ice skater, Lee Valley Ice Centre's coaches have the skills and experience to help you achieve your goals.

To join the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) test system you’ll need private one to one tuition, and all the coaches at the centre are qualified to teach at this level. Most lessons take place on patch ice in 15 minute slots, arranged directly with your coach.

Lesson booking

All private lessons are booked and paid for directly with your coach – the box office can’t book private lessons. If you need to cancel your lesson, please give your instructor at least 48 hours’ notice – otherwise the lesson fee must be paid in full. In addition to your lesson fee you must pay for your patch ice or public session.

Ice times

One to one private lessons are usually held on patch ice that’s graded for different levels of ability and figure skating disciplines. Early morning ice is best for advanced tuition; evening ice is more suited to beginners.

Patch ice times sometimes have to change, so it’s always worth checking before you set out for the centre. For prices please see our prices page.

All patches are open to figure skaters, but the different areas are provided to suit different skill levels and techniques.

The areas break down as:
  • Those suitable for elite skaters (those accredited with full NISA Level 8 or above or with the General Manager's approval).
  • Suitable for junior skaters (NISA Levels 1 to 8).
  • Suitable for novice skaters (Skate UK Bronze Level up to NISA Level 1).
Always pay for patch ice time

Patch ice users must always pay for their time, if not you’ll be asked to leave the ice. If you haven’t paid you won’t be covered by insurance and paying afterwards doesn’t give you insurance cover.

Lesson costs

These vary, but as a guide should expect to pay around £10.00 upwards for a 15 minute lesson slot. This is in addition to your payments for public session and/or patch ice time.

Patch users etiquette

  • All skaters and parents/guardians accompanying skaters to the centre must abide by the centre's rules at all times.
  • Always check with your coach before using patch ice – it may not be suitable for beginners, for instance.
  • Skaters must respect all coaches and be polite and courteous. Skaters must also treat each other and visitors to the centre in the same manner. Bad language, unpleasant remarks, inappropriate conduct or physical violence are not permitted.
  • Also please note that patch ice is for those who are training. Be aware of other skaters at all times. If you skate on patch ice that’s not for your standard of ability, always give way to skaters whose skills suit that patch.

The full patch users’ code is available from the Box Office.

Disputes

Any skater or parent/guardian who has a problem with another skater, coach or parent/guardian must take the problem to their own coach, who will,  if necessary,  refer the issue to the General Manager.
