Lee Valley VeloPark’s indoor velodrome is the fastest track in the world. Everyone from beginners to elite riders are able to ride the track at this iconic venue on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Track Taster session

One hour

Track Tasters are a fun, one-off experience where you can ride the olympic velodrome track.

These one hour sessions are an exciting introduction to track cycling where you'll be coached in the use of a fixed wheel bike and the basic skills required to safely ride the velodrome track.

Flying Lap Taster

These group taster sessions are perfect for groups of friends or colleagues to ride the Olympic track in an amazing one-off experience.

You'll get the chance to take part in a Track Taster session to learn the key techniques of riding our 250 metre velodrome before taking on the BMX track  and all of its different features.

Para-cycling Open Riding

This session for riders with disabilities offers the chance to ride the track at this London 2012 venue. With experienced pilots and using tandem bikes, you’ll learn the basics of riding fixed wheel bikes safely.

If you can ride a bike alone this session is a great way to develop track riding skills.

CoreStart sessions make up our four stage accreditation process.

This series of sessions, coupled with our SkillSeries will help you progress your track cycling, learn new skills, keep fit, and also take advantage of our drop in sessions for both unaccredited and accredited riders.

If you complete Stage 4 of the Accreditation, you can also attend RaceReady sessions and compete in track leagues!

SkillSeries sessions

Improve your track cycling skills and gain confidence in these sessions. These can be repeated to help you master skills both during and after the CoreStart accreditation process.

1a. Track Cycling and Group Techniques

You'll explore basic skills and group exercises to help you ride around the track safely, get more comfortable on a fixed wheel bike and improve your confidence in track cycling.

2a. Bunch Techniques

Improve your techniques in busier group cycling environments. You'll learn key skills including how to move around and through groups using a range of different scenarios.

2b. Techniques with Speed

Mistakes are more likely to happen in stressed situations. This session will teach you how to deal with these situations at high speeds and our fully qualified coaches will have you practising skills learned in previous sessions to help you become a more confident rider.

Track Tandem Pilot training

Training for track cyclists to learn how to pilot a tandem on the track for blind or visually impaired riders. In this two hour session, you’ll learn the basics of tandem riding both as pilot and stoker, and be tutored on the key aspects of working as a pilot with a non-sighted stoker.

The session is progressive and pilots are encouraged to learn and practice at a level that they are comfortable with. You can attend as many sessions as you wish, and once fully trained you can volunteer as a pilot for our Paracycling sessions, which is both highly rewarding and a great workout!

Sessions are free and bikes are included. You do not need to have had any tandem experience before, though you must be a fully accredited rider.

These sessions are for veteran male and senior female riders wishing to ride sprint or endurance disciplines. They are suitable for both those who compete at masters competition and those who enjoy regular fitness training in a relaxed and sociable environment.

RaceReady Derny

Two hours

Minimum age 14

RaceReady Derny is a two hour session for accredited riders. These sessions are for riders training for competition at bunch racing speeds of 50-60Km/hr. Recommended gearing is between 92 and 96 gear inches.

British Cycling Development Centre

Two hours

Age 12 - 18 years

Youth B, A and (space permitting Juniors). Riders require track racing experience or accredited to stage 2 or above. These are development sessions run as part of the British Cycling Talent Development pathway for riders aspiring to, or already attending RSR sessions. These run alternate Thursdays until Track League restarts on 18th October in the same Thursday evening slot.

New riders should find their feet at the Monday night After School club, or the Sunday morning Go-Ride clusters when they restart in September.

RaceReady Gate Track

Two hours

Age 14+ years

Start gate session for fully accredited riders to practice and perfect their starts. The first half of the session will focus on gate starts, whilst in the second half riders will be given the opportunity to perform gated individual pursuit or TT efforts.

As there is no on-track warm up for this session, riders will need to bring or hire rollers for warming up and cooling down.

School groups

We run specially priced one hour sessions for schools to give young people their first taste of track cycling.

Schools can book on to a series of one hour, fully coached sessions to progress their skills.

  • We strongly recommend schools book a Pedal Up session before a discipline specific session for KS1 - KS2 pupils
  • These sessions are suitable for ages 5 - 11
  • All equipment is included
  • Maximum of 15 children per session
  • You must arrive 30 minutes prior to the session time
  • Teachers are not permitted to ride in the session and must act as supervision
  • For the whole group to progress within the session the coach will ensure all children are at a similar basic level. Those who are not may be asked to sit out some sections of the session (and will need to be supervised by a teacher)

Pedal Up school sessions

Sessions are one hour

Pedal Up sessions are the ideal first pedal towards young people riding a bike. Whether they've only recently learnt to ride a bike or want to build confidence - these sessions are a great introduction before going on to develop specific skills for each discipline.

These sessions run by our fully qualified coaches will help children master the FUNdamentals of cycling including basic skills such as cornering, braking and bike handling.

FAQs

How do I get on track?

If you've never ridden a track bike before it doesn't matter! As long as you can ride a bike to a reasonable standard you can experience cycling on the track at the Olympic velodrome.

Taster sessions are available for those that just want to experience cycling in this iconic venue and to those that want to develop their track cycling. This introduces riders to the whole track cycling experience as well as developing the key skills needed to be confident and safe.

Accreditation for regular track cyclists

For those that have cycled in a velodrome before there will be sessions available to use the track once you have passed our four stage accreditation process. Many clubs use the track regularly and these club sessions can be one of the best ways to develop your skills.

I'm already accredited at another 250m velodrome, do I have to complete the Lee Valley VeloPark accreditation?

In order to validate accredited riders from other UK indoor velodromes, riders must have proof of their accreditation (e.g BC UKIVA endorsement), and sign up as a Lee Valley member for free. They will bypass the first two stages and only need to pass stages 3 and 4 of Lee Valley VeloPark's accreditation assessment. On successful completion, riders can then access the complete Lee Valley programme, including SQT’s, specific accredited training sessions and track leagues.

  • If you are a current Professional International track rider (with an elite UCI License) with approval from the venue manager or an assistant manager you will not have to pass the accreditation process.
  • If you are a former pro/national track level rider or a first and elite category road cyclist you will need to start the track accreditation process from stage 1.

What should I wear?

It is mandatory to wear a cycling helmet and track mitts. Riders are required to provide track mitts. Bike and helmet hire is included in taster sessions. Helmets and track mitts are available to hire for sessions or you may bring your own but they must meet the safety regulations stated in our essential information.

We recommend the following:

  • Legs: Cycling or sports shorts are best but track suits/jogging bottoms would be fine. They must be close fitting so they do not catch the wheels or chain.
  • Upper body: A lightweight long-sleeved top with a t-shirt underneath is suitable. Shoulders must be covered.
  • Shoes: You can wear normal trainers for track sessions or if you wish to bring your own cleats we use Look Keo pedals so Look Keo cleats can be worn.  Please note that other makes are not necessarily compatible – even if they say that they are. You may not bring your own pedals for use on our hire bikes.

Can I cycle when pregnant?

Unfortunately we do not allow women who are pregnant to cycle any of our tracks or circuits whilst pregnant.

Essential information

  • For all sessions you must arrive at least 45 minutes before your session is due to start and be present in the track centre ready to start 15 minutes before the session begins.
  • Riders must be capable of riding without stabilisers to use the circuits
  • Children under 12 cannot currently ride the track in public sessions.
  • Children aged 12 - 15 must participate within a specific  supervised/course/club session
  • Children under 18 participating in any sessions e.g. general taster sessions, youth taster sessions, skills sessions, pay and ride must bring a signed Parental/Guardian Consent Form with them to be able to participate in their session.
  • Should the child be participating in a ‘coached’ session the parent/guardian should remain in the area indicated by the coach during the safety briefing and/or follow meeting instructions given.
  • Junior prices apply to riders under 18.
  • Riders participating in a Track Taster session are required to provide track mitts. Bike and helmet hire is included in taster sessions.
  • Equipment hire: Taster sessions include bike and helmet hire, all other sessions do not include any equipment (unless otherwise specified) - you can hire equipment (bike/helmet/mitts/shoes) from the venue but you will require personal identification and proof of address (utility, bank or other statements must be less than three months old). The pedals on our bikes are Look Keo, and using your own pedals on hire bikes is not permitted
  • Riders are required to wear helmets and safety equipment while cycling on any of the four circuits at Lee Valley VeloPark. Where this is not included in the session cost you may hire a helmet from the venue. The helmet must be worn correctly at all times when with a bike. If you wish to bring your own it must meet the current UK safety standard - BS EN 1078:1997.
  • Cycling and other activities available at Lee Valley VeloPark carry inherent risks. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement. If you're unsure whether you are able to participate in any activity, or if you have any questions concerning our terms and conditions, your booking form or the safety and risk declaration, please ask a member of staff before you enter into a contract or agree to partake in cycling at Lee Valley VeloPark.
  • The weight limit for our hire bikes is 109kg (17st 2lbs) and the minimum height is 1.3 metres (4ft 5in).
